The Direct Answer

Fascias and soffits, the boards running along the roofline and underneath the gutter, go grey because they sit directly under the gutter and catch everything that runs or drips off the roof: algae, moss residue, general airborne grime. Most of this comes off with a proper clean from the ground on poles, using a pure water rinse rather than anything abrasive. Deep-set staining that has been there for years sometimes leaves a shadow, but the difference before and after is usually dramatic.

Why they go grey faster than anywhere else

  • They sit directly below the gutter, so overflow and drips land on them first.
  • Roof moss washes down and streaks across them.
  • They rarely get looked at, let alone cleaned, until they are obviously bad.
  • uPVC holds algae in its slight texture more than people expect.

How it is done

From the ground using extension poles, never a ladder propped against the fascia itself, which can mark or crack it. A pure water rinse lifts the grime without leaving the mineral residue a normal hose would, and the boards dry streak-free.

Is it worth doing on its own?

On its own, usually from £80. Booked at the same time as a gutter clear it costs less again, since we are already up there with the poles out.

What does not come back to white

If the uPVC itself has yellowed from age or sun exposure rather than simply being dirty, a clean improves it but will not reverse yellowing in the plastic itself. We tell you honestly which you are dealing with before starting, not after.

FAQ: Will this damage old or brittle fascias?

No. Pure water at low pressure from a pole is gentle enough for fascias that are starting to show their age, which a jet wash is not.

FAQ: What does it cost?

From £80, less again when booked with a gutter clear. Full detail on the fascia and soffit page.
